Project Resource Planning
Resource Planning relates to how each Project is organized and Progressus provides tools to support several methods:
Method | Description |
---|---|
Top-Down Planning | The Project Manager aims to scope the full Project. |
Bottom-Up Planning | The Project Manager only defines the milestones, and the Project Team works independently thereafter. |
Progressus enables each Resource to plan a day with their preferred method:
Method | Description |
---|---|
Outlook Calendar | Plan a day using Outlook Calendar |
Resource Board | Plan your day using the Resource Board |
Tip
The following examples mention using the Project Gantt Chart to define Start Dates and End Dates for each Project and Task, as well as defining Work Assignments in the Resource Planner. Note that these Tasks can also be completed by using the Import Budget option in the Resource Board. For more information, see: Import Budget
Top-Down Planning
Resource Planning provides tools for Top-Down Project Planning.
Top-Down Planning process example
- Create a new Project with Start and End Dates using the Progressus Project Wizard.
- Create Project Tasks.
- Create the Project Budget.
- Open the Gantt Chart and define Start and End Dates for each Project, Task, and any logic dependencies.
- Open Resource Planner and define Work Assignments for a Resource Group or individual Resource within the specified Budgeted Hours and Project/Task Start and End Dates.
- Line Manager can then assign a Resource to the Work Assignments.
- If the Work Assignments have a Resource Group designated, the Project Manager or Line Manager assigns the individual Resource and makes the change on the Work Assignment Card.
- After selecting the Resource on the * Work Assignment Card, click on the ellipsis to select Add to Outlook Calendar. For more information, see: Update Outlook Calendar with Budget Entries
Bottom-Up Planning
Resource Planning provides tools for Bottom-Up Project Planning.
Bottom-Up Planning process example
Create a new Project with Start and End Dates using the Progressus Project Wizard.
- Create Project Tasks with budgets that represent milestones.
Define Project Team Members and communicate clear goals and values for each milestone.
The Project Team works independently and creates necessary Work Assignments via the Resource Planner to complete each milestone.
Follow Project progress using the Gantt Chart where Work Assignments are shown as red baselines under each milestone to make it easy to compare and adjust the plan according to the real progress.
Hybrid Planning
Resource Planning provides tools for Hybrid Project Planning between a Top-Down and Bottom-Up approach.
Hybrid Planning process example:
Create a new Project with Start and End Dates using the Progressus Project Wizard.
- Create Project Tasks.
- Create the Project Budget.
Open the Gantt Chart and define Start and End Dates for each Project/Task and any logic dependencies.
Define Project Team members and communicate clear goals and values for each Project/Task.
The Project Team works independently and creates necessary Work Assignments via Resource Planner to complete each project/task in the sequence defined by the Gantt Chart.
Follow Project progress using the Gantt Chart where Work Assignments are shown as red baselines under each milestone to make it easy to compare and adjust the plan according to the real progress.
Outlook Calendar
Work Assignments can be synchronized to each Resource's Outlook Calendar. In this way a Resource can merge their personal schedule with the Project schedule in the Outlook Calendar to see their daily plan. For more information on setting up Outlook integration between Resource Planning and Outlook Calendars, see:

Work Assignment
When work for Resources is planned for Projects and Tasks, it is defined as a Work Assignment.
To add a Project Team Member to a Work Assignment, navigate to the Project Card > Project > Project Teams.
For information on creating new Work assignments, Project Teams, or adding Project Team Members, see: Work Assignments
Work Permission Set
Work Permission Sets are used to manage to what degree a Resource can modify Work Assignments for a specific Project. There are different Work Permission Types for a Work Permission Set, and each defines an area of data or an event. For more information on Work Permission Sets, see: Work Permission Sets
